Hamilton: “When the DRS opens, Red Bull is 35 km / h faster than us” – F1 Piloti – Formula 1

In the first part of the United States Grand Prix Lewis Hamilton, found himself in second position behind Max Verstappen, he tried to resist the Dutchman. The progress of the race, with the problem at the pit stop of the world leader, had then given him the first position on a silver platter and so Hamilton had dreamed of the first win of the season. But Verstappen is not a rider who gives up easily and, also thanks to his Red Bull, he quickly closed the gap of six seconds, coming to make the decisive overtaking at 51st of 56 laps scheduled, with a successful maneuver in Turn 12. Hamilton was unable to reply to his rival, despite having remained in the DRS area for a few laps, and therefore had to raise the white flag and settle for second position.

The seven-time world champion, however, does not want to delude himself after fighting for success in Austin: “Honestly it’s hard to say if we’ve made a step forward, the team will know. But often these are different races and having an exact perception of what may have happened from the last race to this one is difficult ”. For Hamilton the most obvious weak point is the top speed: “There Red Bull it was very fast on the straight, I think with the DRS open they are faster than us by something like 35 km / h. While if we are chasing them with the DRS, we have only 22 km / h of advantage. So she could sink the overtaking even though she was far behind. But even without DRS, I think they have about 8 km / h ahead of us. We lose a lot on the straight, at least four tenths per lap. We need to improve this on next year’s car “. Hamilton is currently 6th in the 2022 World Championship with three races to go, further behind his worst career finish, 5th place in 2009 and 2011 with McLaren.
