The Dutchman, during the mixed team time trial, allegedly “attracted” the bird with the logo of a fish drawn on the suit
Danger comes from … the sky. Not from the track, not from the opponents, but from a seagull: Bauke Mollema, Dutch road cyclist competing in the World Championships in Australia, was attacked by a seagull during the race. Perhaps because of the fish logo drawn on the suit. Fortunately, thanks to an acrobatic maneuver, the cyclist managed to avoid the fall, but it did not help him for the final result. A very unfortunate race for him and for Holland, because at the start, after a few kilometers, the orange had to stop due to a mechanical accident: chain failure, which is stuck, and forced bicycle change. As if that weren’t enough, at the start teammate van Vleuten had immediately flown to the ground
in fact decreeing the end of the Dutch hopes for a possible conquest of the World Cup.
Said of the seagull, however, it is not the first time that a bird attacks a cyclist: the previous victim had been Remco Evenepoel. In that case it was a magpie: «It is rather terrifying – commented the winner of the Vuelta -, but apparently this is Australia! Suddenly the magpie started fluttering over my head, it was scary. I hope it’s the only time, but I’m terrified“.
