For the past few weeks, everything indicated that if the game of “The Red Devils” did not change, the days of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer would be numbered. In fact it happened – a 1: 4 defeat to Watford ended the Norwegian’s career at Old Trafford, the club announced on Sunday.
Michael Carrick replaced Solskjaer
The dismissed Solskjaer was replaced by Michael Carrick, one of the Norwegian assistants. So far the club has not communicated how long the former “Red Devils” midfielder will hold this position. His task, however, is to lead the team to the end of the current Premier League season.
Interesting information about Carrick was provided by the British station “ESPN”. Carrick wasn’t supposed to take over the first team; Mike Phelan, one of Solskjaer’s assistants, would be in the role of interim coach. The 59-year-old has been working at the club since the times of Sir Alex Ferguson, and he gathered his first coaching skills in Hull City.

The club was afraid of the fans’ reaction
Manchester United activists decided to choose a different, safer solution and entrust the task of rebuilding the team to Carrick. According to the media, the club’s management was to be concerned about the fans’ reaction and expected that Carrick would be better received by the fans.
The media, however, are not sure whether the change in the position of the trainer will bring the expected results. During many training sessions and preparations for the matches, Solskjaer’s assistants were present, so it is highly probable that after the Norwegian’s departure, they will at least partially apply some of his decisions or strategies.
Michael Carrick will make his debut as manager of “Red Devils” on Tuesday. In the fifth round of the Champions League group stage, Manchester United will play away against Villarreal.
