A van driving fast towards the border was spotted at the crossing in Harka. One of the border guards stood in her way, signaling her to stop for inspection. Instead, the driver depressed the gas pedal, forcing the officer to jump to the side.

Another border guard fired shots at the vehicle, wanting to force the driver to change direction. A van with Hungarian license plates crossed the border and then broke down.

Austrian police detained an Egyptian driver and around 30 people of unknown nationality, Hungarian police said.

According to the Hungarian police, in the last weeks of last year the Hungarian authorities prevented about 2,000-2,500 migrants per week from entering the country on the southern border with Serbia and Romania.
