‘I lost my godson before Portugal’

The Ghanaian forward on Instagram: “My daughter was rushed to hospital after Uruguay”

It was a complicated World Cup for André Ayew who, after the elimination of Ghana, confessed to having suffered a terrible mourning and having come close to another. “Personally, these have been very difficult moments for me in recent days. I lost my godson the morning before the Portugal game, and my daughter was also rushed to hospital after Uruguay – wrote the Ghanaian number 10 on Instagram -. Thanks to Almighty Allah, it is getting better. These difficult times will inspire me to come back stronger and better in the future, and so I believe, the Black Stars will. Thank you all for your prayers and wholehearted support. Rest in peace Adam.”

I shiver to read the words of Ayew, one of the two sons of the legendary Abedì Pelé (European champion with Marseille and passing through Italy with Turin, in the mid-90s, winner of the African Ballon d’Or three times and considered the strongest Ghanaian ever), took to the field despite the tragedy. Against the Lusitanians, among other things, Ayew also scored, making the momentary 1-1 goal (then the match ended 3-2 for Ronaldo and his companions).

A great demonstration of professionalism and personality also repeated against Uruguay. The number 10, at 0-0, had the penalty saved that would have brought Ghana closer to qualification and risked another drama in the family. In fact, her daughter would have passed out in the stands caught by a small illness precisely because of her father’s mistake from the spot. At the interval, Ayew had himself replaced in order to be able to reach the hospital where the little girl had been transported, who was in good health after the fainting caused by the emotion.
