Lionel Messi is one of the greatest players in football history, being named the best player in the world six times, six times the Golden Boot – destined for Europe’s top goalscorer this season, top scorer in the history of the Champions League and more than 700 goals in the career.

However, in his first season with the PSG shirt, Messi experienced a goal drought that had not been seen in 16 years. The Argentine scored just 11 goals. Five in the Champions League and six in the French Championship. He only scored fewer goals in one season, when he was 18 and moving up through Barcelona’s youth ranks in the 2005/06 season. On that occasion, Messi scored eight goals.

And this drought of goals seems like it’s not just with the PSG shirt. At an event held this week in Qatar, at the Olympic and Sport Museum in Doha, the Argentine was present and took a penalty against a robot that was in the goal. But, the robot achieved what many goalkeepers could not, which is to defend the shot of one of the greatest players in history. See the kick:

After the kick, Messi laughed but was a little embarrassed by the defence. As Milton Leite would say, “what a faaase” of Lionel Messi. See the kick with the Argentine’s reaction:

Messi will return to Qatar in November to defend Argentina at the World Cup. Will he be aiming better at the end of the year? Now, the striker is preparing for the last game of the French Championship, which takes place next Saturday (21), against Metz, at 16:00 (Brasilia time). Already champions, PSG only fulfills the table. Even with the anticipated title, the team of Mbappé, Neymar and Messi, has been the target of much criticism for not presenting good football in most games.

See below all the goals of the striker in his first year playing in the French Championship:

This is the season in which Messi scores fewer goals in a National Championship.

It is not possible to know exactly the reason for the striker’s drop in performance, but it is likely that it is the change of club and the lack of fit with his teammates, or even an adaptation to another league. The age factor could play a role too. He is currently 34 years old and the decline is natural. However, a season earlier, Messi was the top scorer in La Liga with 30 goals. In other words, he scored five times as many goals as he did this season, at the age of 33.

With this negative mark, Messi does not even appear in the top 300 of the Golden Boot award, which is awarded to the top scorer of the European national championships this season. The leadership, in isolation, belongs to Lewandowski, from Bayern Munich.
