In few hours from the alarm of heat and drought to the damage of bad weather. Foretold by the weather reports, violent thunderstorms began to appear in the evening over some areas of Italy, particularly in the north. The abrupt transition from temperatures close to 40 degrees (with months of drought behind) to violent rains it was not without consequences.

At the expense of some municipalities in South Tyrol. Moments of fear were experienced in Val di Fleres, the last valley of Italy before the Italian-Austrian border of the Brenner, where a two-meter-high mudslide caused by a violent storm reached the village of Sant’Antonio. Six houses were damaged, three seriously (boiler room and cellars flooded) and one was evacuated. The area around San Martino in Badia was the hardest hit. Until now more than 200 interventions by about 1000 volunteer firefighters were recorded. The firefighters report that at the moment no people are involved in the various landslides and floods.

Bad weather also forced two groups of scouts to ask for help. The boys were in Val Frison, the valley that climbs from Campolongo to Forcella Lavardet. The rescue team and the firefighters reached the group, saving them from the Frison River, which in the meantime had swollen, loading mud and stones. The scouts were accompanied for 300 meters to a small building where they were able to spend the night. This morning a team accompanied them to retrieve the tents.

But they weren’t the only ones. Last night the Alpine Rescue of Curtain it was activated by another group of scouts from Tuscany. Eleven boys between 18 and 32 years old. The group was returning to the valley, warned of bad weather, when, at the Felizon Bridge in Fiames, they were blocked by a landslide. A team managed to reach them and bring them to safety.

The Val Badia state road 244 is closed between San Martino in Badia and La Valle, provincial road 43 between San Vigilio di Marebbe and Valdaora is also closed.

In the following hours rainfall has moved further south, again causing damage. In Trentino, where a yellow alert was issued by the Civil Protection, a water bomb was unleashed on the Fassa valley, provoking flooding in hotels and homes private in Mazzin, Pera, Vigo, Pozza, and other towns in the area. Some streams are flooded, already a hundred people evacuated who will spend the night in gyms or Civil Protection centers.

Firefighters in action also in Valle d’Aosta: in Courmayeur a landslide affected the road leading to the Val Ferret, at the foot of the Mont Blanc massif, in an area already subject to strong hydrogeological risk. The road is completely blocked and the helicopter rescue has been activated to evacuate 4 people who were trapped between two languages of the landslide.
