Intel Core i3-12100 – tests of the cheap Alder Lake-S processor leaked

We are after the premiere of the top 12th generation Intel Core processors (Alder Lake), but we are still waiting for the appearance of weaker and cheaper models. The Core i3-12100 tests have just leaked to the network – if you believe the leaks, the new unit can seriously threaten cheaper AMD models.

So far, Intel’s offer includes only more efficient, unlocked versions of the 12th generation processors (including the Core i9-12900K and Core i5-12600K models we tested). We know, however, that the manufacturer’s plans also include weaker, blocked units.

The Hong Kong-based XFastest editors obtained an engineering sample of the Intel Core i3-12100 model and compared it to the competing AMD Ryzen 3 3100 and Ryzen 3 3300X (Zen 2) chipsets.

Intel Core i3-12100 - processor specification

The 12100 is equipped with 4 cores / 8 threads P-Core (we will not find weaker E-Core cores here), which work at 3.3 GHz in the base mode and 4.3 GHz in the Turbo Boost mode. In addition, there are 5 MB L2 cache, 12 MB L3 cache and integrated UHD Graphics 730 graphics. The TDP factor is estimated at 60 W (the maximum power limit is 77 W).

The processors were tested on a configuration with 2x 8 GB DDR4-3600 memory and a GeForce RTX 3060 Ti graphics card (you can therefore say that this is a mid-range gaming set). It is worth noting, however, that the AMD models were checked only with standard settings (unlike Intel, they can be additionally tweaked).

In typical processor tests it is really good – the Core i3-12100 easily beats the Ryzen 3 3100 and 3300X models (the advantage here is about 20-37% compared to the 3300X and 30-44% compared to the 3100, so we are talking about a really big difference).

In games, it looks … a bit different. In CS: GO, the new Intel model is better by a few or a dozen percent, and in Cyberpunk 2077 with standard settings it is practically the same. It is different when RT or RT with DLSS are switched on – the difference increases to 15-18% compared to the 3300X and 45% compared to the 3100.

However, this is not the end of the revelation! The new Core i3 works with significantly lower temperatures and at a lower load has a similar energy demand as the Ryzen 3 3100 (with a more powerful Intel model it is clearly more “power-hungry”).

Intel Core i3-12100 – the hit of cheap computers is coming?

What can I say, Core i3-12100 promises to be very promising and may become a hit with cheaper computers – the processor will offer much better performance in processor tests and slightly better performance in games compared to the Ryzen 3 3000. The choice of the new “i-three” may speak for also the presence of integrated graphics (which in times of problems with the availability of graphics cards is even more important). However, it is not known what the issue of price and profitability of the entire platform will look like.

Of course, so far we rely on unofficial information that should be approached with limited confidence. How will it actually be? We should find out at the beginning of next year – according to unofficial leaks, in January we will see the premiere of new, weaker processors and cheaper motherboards under the LGA 1700 (with H670, B660 and H610 chipsets).

By the way, we are also waiting for the AMD move. Reds, go ahead … four letters! Maybe this is the right time to release the weaker Ryzen 5000 processors – the market clearly lacks models like the Ryzen 3 5100, 5300X or 5400G.
