The decision on this matter was made after the government’s very stormy deliberation, according to the media, on the day it was recorded new infection record since the beginning of the pandemic – over 179,000 infection in one day.
Several groups of the broad government coalition wanted to be introduced vaccination obligation for everyone. Ultimately, thanks to the mediation of Prime Minister Mario Draghi, a compromise solution was found.
– We want to halt the growth of the infection curve and persuade the Italians who have not yet vaccinated to do so. We intervene in particular in the case of age groups that are more exposed to hospitalization, in order to reduce the pressure on hospitals and save lives, the head of government said after the meeting.
– The decisions we make are aimed at reducing the number of unvaccinated people as much as possible, because it is this group that causes pressure on our hospital system – said Minister of Health Roberto Speranza. As he added, nowadays two-thirds of COVID-19 patients in intensive care units are unvaccinated.
In the remaining wards, they account for half of the patients.
