Franchise director Chad Stahelski has already jotted down ideas for five more John Wick sequels…
Spoiler alert! This article reveals the end of John Wick: Chapter 4.
After its fourth installment, released last March, the question of whether the John Wick franchise will continue is on everyone’s lips – rightly so since the film ends with the potential death of the protagonist played by Keanu Reeves after facing the assassin Caine (Donnie Yen). In an interview with Inverse (via ComingSoon), Chad Stahelski, however, revealed that the saga could well continue…
“I have notebooks and notebooks full of shit for John Wick 5, 6, 7, 8, 9. We have a lot of ideas. We just don’t have a definitive story. I’m not interested in bringing back John Wick for money. Is this a character I like? Of course. How about I make a few John Wick movies, great. Keanu would do one again in a second if we had a good story. We leave this open. I know the studio would love it if we said we’re doing another one.”
For Chad Stahelski and Keanu Reeves, then, it all depends on whether they have a good story to tell. “Keanu and I are still interested in it but we’re leaving it a little up in the air to figure out if we have anything we’d like to watch. Secondly, we have a very enthusiastic studio and not just financially motivated: they are just interested to see what we could do. So they’ve been super nice to us this year about expanding,” he declared to the subjects of the various spin-offs of the franchise.
The director continues: “Keanu and I went to them and we said, ‘Look, we have ideas for the world of John Wick, other characters that aren’t centered on John Wick. Would you be interested in exploring this?’ And they were super cool and said, ‘Yeah, we’d be really interested in that.’ Characters that weren’t in any of the films that were sidelined because they just didn’t fit into our storylines, and some existing characters that we would like to see otherwise.”
KEANU REEVES BACK?
We told you about it in a previous article, but franchise producer Basil Iwanyk told Collider last month that Keanu Reeves had wanted to be “permanently” killed at the end of John Wick: Chapter 4 and that making these films was destroying him “physically and emotionally”.
“In the end he always says, ‘I can’t do this again’ and we agree with him. The guy is just a shadow of himself because he keeps going and going. He said, ‘I definitely want to be killed at the end of this movie.’ We said, ‘You know, we’re going to leave a little opening of 10%.’”
Franchise John Wick is currently developing with a spin-off prequel series, The Continental, broadcast since September 22. A spin-off feature film, Ballerina, starring Ana de Armas in the lead role is also scheduled for release on June 7, 2024 in the United States.
John Wick: Chapter 4 is currently available on VOD. The series The Continental can be discovered on Amazon Prime Video.
