Johnny Depp honored at two film festivals. “Terrible message”

The organizers of the 69th edition of the International Film Festival in San Sebastian announced that during the event scheduled for September, Johnny Depp will receive the Donostia award, which is awarded for lifetime achievement. This will happen on September 22 during a special gala. In recent years, this award was received, among others, by Viggo Mortensen, Penelope Cruz, Donald Sutherland, and Monica Bellucci. In the issued statement, the representatives of the festival named Depp one of the most talented and versatile actors in contemporary cinema.

The star was twice at the party in San Sebastian. First, in 1998, he came there with director Terry Gilliam and their joint film “Las Vegas Parano”. Depp was also in the Basque Country in 2020 promoting the documentary “Crock of Gold: A Couple of Queues with Shane MacGowan” which he produced.

The awarding of the award to Depp has outraged members of the Spanish film industry’s women’s association, as a British court recently confirmed that the actor had used domestic violence against Amber Heard when he was her husband.

– It speaks very badly about the festival and its management. This carries a terrible message to the world: “It doesn’t matter if you are a torturer if you are a good actor,” said Cristina Andreu, president of the association, in an interview with the Associated Press.

Shortly after the announcement that Depp would be receiving the award in San Sebastian, it was announced that the star would also appear at the festival in Karlovy Vary, which is scheduled for August 20-28. Depp will present “Crock of Gold: A Few Queues with Shane MacGowan”, as well as the fact-based drama “Minamata”, in which he played the role of a war photographer.

The second special guest of the festival in Karlovy Vary will be Sir Michael Caine, who at the opening ceremony will receive a Crystal Globe for his outstanding contribution to world cinema. The British actor will also present his latest film – the comedy-drama “Best Sellers”, in which he plays a grumpy, retired writer.
