Jürgen Klopp has to explain himself to an African journalist. “It was ironic”

Jürgen Klopp is one of the coaches who are not very fond of national breaks and got him after the last comment about the African Nations Cup.

Breaks for national team matches have been controversial in the world of football for years. While many national team tournaments still arouse great interest among fans, coaches and activists are constantly complaining that the additional matches not only break the league calendar, but also sometimes have consequences in the form of injuries and fatigue of players.

Recently, Jürgen Klopp complained about this, who in an interview with journalists complained that he would lose Mohamed Salah, Sadio Mané and Naby Keïta in January due to the African Cup of Nations held from January 9 to February 6. Some of his statements, however, were badly received in Africa itself.

African journalist Ojora Babatunde from OJB Sports joined the Liverpool FC manager at a recent press conference. He reminded Klopp that he called the African Cup of Nations a “small tournament”, which Germany did not agree with.

– I didn’t mean that. Honestly, I don’t know why you took it that way …

Babatunde argued that Klopp should not be dodging his words as he is convinced he said so, so the coach decided to clarify the situation.

– It wasn’t that, let’s be serious. I wasn’t even close to having something like this cross my mind. I wouldn’t call the Africa Cup of Nations a “little tournament” and I certainly wouldn’t call Africa a “little continent”, none of that. If you had watched the entire press conference, you would have known what I meant because I said there are now no other breaks for the national team until March.

“I said, ‘oh, we have a little tournament in January’, but it wasn’t about its rank, but the fact that it’s being held on that date was ironic. It’s still a big tournament. We lose our best players because of him …

After this statement, however, the journalist again accused Klopp that he would not have said similar words if it were the tournament of European national teams.

– English is not my native language, but if you want to get me wrong, you can do it whenever you want. I know that I would never have thought that. I have no idea why you took it that way, it’s not fair. I did not want to offend anyone, but as you can see you cannot be one hundred percent honest – replied the German.
