On the red carpet
In the last decade alone, various examples can be cited: Gwyneth Paltrow in white Tom Ford at the 2012 Oscars, Lupita Nyong’o in scarlet Ralph Lauren at the 2014 Golden Globes and Lady Gaga in silver Givenchy Haute Couture at the premiere of A star is born in 2018. At the 2020 Academy Awards, in particular, the presence of the cape characterized the outfits of Brie Larson (Celine), Maya Rudolph (Valentino), Olivia Colman (Stella McCartney), Natalie Portman (Dior) and Tracee Ellis Ross; in the latter case, the dress was directly inspired by Elizabeth Taylor’s costume in Cleopatra. Again, at the Critics’ Choice Awards 2022, held last March, the candidate for best actress Selena Gomez was splendid in a red cape dress by Louis Vuitton by Nicolas Ghesquière.
The dress for the first state banquet as Princess of Wales
Kate Middleton, Princess of Wales recently attended a state dinner at Buckingham Palace in honor of South African President Cyril Ramaphosa, wearing a white Jenny Packham dress whose built-in cape flowed from her shoulders studded with crystals. It wasn’t the first event that saw the princess wear such a dress, but, in this case, the occasion was particularly significant. It was in fact the first state banquet Kate attended after taking on her new title, with the responsibilities that go with it. Following the death of Queen Elizabeth II on 8 September 2022, Kate’s husband Prince William became first in line to the throne, and the couple therefore play a key role for the British monarchy on the world stage. The princess dressed accordingly, completing her decidedly regal outfit with the Lover’s Knot tiara, a favorite of Princess Diana.
