Kenya, William Ruto is the new president. Protests and fires in Nairobi-

Four out of seven members of the Electoral Commission objected that they could not recognize the results. Those who remain “are heroes” for the new president

The president of the electoral commission of Kenya, Wafula Chebukati, has proclaimed William Ruto, current vice president of the country, president. According to the official results released, Ruto obtained almost 7.18 million votes (50.49%) against 6.94 million (48.85%) of his rival, Raila Odinga, in the vote on 9 August. But it is chaos: four out of seven members of the commission objected that they could not recognize the results. “We cannot take responsibility for the result that will be announced,” Juliana Cherera, the commission’s vice president, told reporters. There are clashes and violent demonstrations, and even fires, in several districts of the capital, Nairobi. In the Kibera area, a pyre of tires, set on fire by the supporters of the rival, burns and gathers around it the discontent of the opponents.

For his part, the new president Ruto declared that “the officials of the electoral commission are heroes”, as the first official speech after the election. Aware of the divisions in the country, he promised to “work together with all the other leaders”: there is no room, he said, “for revenge: our country needs all hands committed to work”. Now supporters of rival Raila Odinga are gathering in front of the central Serena hotel in the capital to demonstrate against elections they define as “rigged”.
