La Palma: The San Juan volcano “disappeared” due to the Cumbre Vieja eruption

“Today, the volcano Cumbre Vieja devoured one of its ancestors – San Juan,” the Spanish daily ABC wrote on Monday.

The newspaper noted that the lava from Cumbre Vieja had covered the roads leading to the San Juan peak. They indicated that its crater was completely buried with ash emerging from the currently active volcano on La Palma.

Meanwhile, on Monday afternoon, Canary Islands authorities ordered the evacuation of 3,000 people from the town of Tazacorte, who was threatened by the high presence of sulfur dioxide in the air from the Cumbre Vieja volcano.

They reminded that out of over 2,000 over 1.1 thousand buildings in La Palma destroyed by the volcanic eruption are residential houses.

Volcanologists from Spain’s National Geographic Institute (IGN) have reported seismic activity around the volcano in the past 24 hours. They reported that the magnitude of the quakes had reached 4.8 on Monday.
