Leonardo held the position of director of football at Paris Saint-Germain for the last three years, until he ended his cycle at the end of last season. In an interview with the French newspaper “L’Équipe”, the Brazilian analyzes the period in a positive way and recalls something that will be remarkable in his career, the arrival of Lionel Messi to the Club, coming from Barcelona, already with legend status.

“The signing of Messi was something unexpected. I think about it and say that I participated in the only transfer of Messi in his career. There’s Pele, Maradona and him. So when I take stock of my time here, I count the Champions League final, the French Championship titles, the Coupe de France … and his signing,” said the former PSG director of football.

“When three young talents arrive like Hakimi, Nuno Mendes and Donnarumma, as well as Sergio Ramos, Wijnaldum and Messi, everyone thought: “What is this?” Then you lose to Real Madrid in the round of 16 and “What the f…, it’s sports management, it’s the team…”, completed Leonardo. With the hiring of all these names, Paris Saint-Germain was left with only the Ligue 1 title.

During his time at PSG, Leonardo won two French Championship titles, twice the Coupe de France and once the French Super Cup, in addition to the French League Cup. At European level, it reached the Champions League final in the 2019-2020 season, losing only to Bayern Munich in the grand final, played in Lisbon, at Estádio da Luz.

Leonardo also answered whether his departure would be related to Mbappé’s stay in the Parisian squad. “No, they didn’t tell me that (that it would be on account of Mbappé). But I don’t want to go into those details. And the fact that they have kept a player of this level, French and Parisian, is important for PSG and Ligue 1.” His former position is now taken over by the Portuguese Luís Campos.
