LM: Sporting – Borussia. Result and relation

The last two defeats with Ajax meant that Borussia Dortmund had to tremble for a promotion to the knockout stage, because the situation in the Group C table was such that the Bundesliga team had the same number of points after four rounds as Sporting, who in addition had a match against BVB at home in Lisbon.

So the start at José Alvalade was extremely important in the context of the promotion. In practice, Borussia’s draw was enough, because in the last round she faced Besiktas, a team that had a set of five defeats and no chance of promotion. Sporting had to win.

The match was balanced, but in the 30th minute the hosts took the lead thanks to Pedro Goncalves. The same player scored the second goal nine minutes later, showing off with a great shot from a distance. Such hits are called the “stadiums of the world” and in this particular case, there is no exaggeration.

Two solid blows meant that Borussia was unable to get up from her knees until the break and she went to the dressing room with the luggage of two goals. It did not bode well for the promotion. Especially that after the change of sides, the hosts controlled the pitch.

The situation for BVB got disastrous when Emre Can was shown a red card for unsportsmanlike conduct after 74 minutes. The game in Dortmund ended with a BVB win 1-0, which meant that Borussia had one goal to keep a chance of promotion, but in “10” it was not an easy task.

In the 79th minute, Paulinho fell down in the visitors’ penalty area, but the referee ordered the game to continue. However, a moment later he decided to use the VAR analysis after which he pointed to the eleventh meter. Pedro Goncalves approached the ball, but he missed a penalty, depriving himself of the chance to complete a hat trick. However, fortunately for the hosts, Pedro Porro showed an effective rebound and it was 3-0.

In the third minute of added time, the guests reduced the size of the defeat, because Donyell Malen hit the net, but they couldn’t afford more. Sporting’s victory by two goals means that we will see the Portuguese team in the knockout stage, while Borussia will play in the Europa League, taking third place in group C.
