Lo Scalo: “From trattoria to international restaurant, a success story built with constancy, quality and the union of the family

The historic Lo Scalo restaurant is heir to a long tradition that runs through the veins and heart of the Longo family. Located in the Marina di Novaglie, in an inlet overlooking the sea a few kilometers from Santa Maria di Leuca, the extreme heel of Italy, right where legend has it that the Adriatic and Ionian Seas meet.

“Lo Scalo was founded in 1968 as a small trattoria by the will of the grandparents Maria Vittoria and Cesarino, a fisherman with six dependent children”, says his grandson Cesare Longo, who from a very young age has accumulated international experience in the catering sector. “Together they decide to get involved and rewrite their lives from scratch by embarking on the tortuous path of catering and she, the undisputed queen of the kitchen, already at the time managed to combine her grandfather’s fresh fish with a pinch of creativity, cheering up the evenings in the company of friends, a glass of wine and a song. Since then, a long way has been made – he continues – the place has been completely renovated, creating a unique stage: an extraordinary panoramic terrace, suspended between sky and sea and a refined and exclusive location. Today the restaurant, also equipped with a private solarium with sun loungers and umbrellas overlooking the enchanting bay of Novaglie, has become a privileged destination of the international jet set, hosting over the years the likes of King Juan Carlos of Spain, Roberto Cavalli, Jude Law , Sienna Miller and David Gilmour of Pink Floyd ”.

Lo Scalo is currently managed by Maria Nicolì, Cesarino’s daughter, together with her husband Pippi Longo and their sons Agostino and Cesare. Pippi, former cook on board on the blue ships of the Lauro fleet, is the entrepreneurial soul of the restaurant; Maria, the ‘Signora dello Scalo’, is an exceptional hostess who welcomes guests who choose this heavenly corner of Salento to spend days of pleasure and beauty. As for their children, the third generation raised on bread and Scalo, Agostino is the king of the room, while Cesare oversees the kitchen.

“Lo Scalo is synonymous with passion, history, family, but also innovation. We have reached the third generation of restaurateurs transforming the place into one of the most famous restaurants in the area, frequented by celebrities from all over the world ”, explains Cesare Longo. “However, we remain faithful to tradition, which has always distinguished us, combined with great hospitality in an enchanting environment. In over forty years we have gained prestige and success despite our humble origins and this makes us proud of the path we have taken. The restyling project is a continuous working progress in search of excellence – he underlines – adjacent to the restaurant, we have created the ‘Lo Scalo’ bathing establishment to offer all the comforts and services and satisfy every customer need. In short, Lo Scalo today is the ideal place for all those who want to relax in a unique landscape in the suggestive setting of the Marina di Novaglie “.

Culture of hospitality and excellence of services have allowed the Longo family to evolve and stand out from an experiential tourism perspective, thanks also to the possibility of boat excursions, to discover the numerous and splendid natural sea caves that embellish the coastal stretch .
