Mariah Carey isn’t the only Christmas queen, at least not according to the US Trademark Trial and Appeals Board.
According to a press release issued Tuesday, the board ruled against the pop star, 52, after she requested exclusive rights to the phrases “Queen of Christmas,” “Princess Christmas,” and “QOC.”
USA TODAY reached out to representatives for Carey for comment.
The release was presented by a representative for Elizabeth Chan, a full-time artist who records Christmas and holiday music who has been embroiled in a months-long legal battle to block Carey’s trademark bid.
“This was a classic case of brand bullying. We are thrilled with this victory and thrilled that we were able to help Elizabeth resist Carrie’s trademark filings,” Chan’s attorney Louis Tombros said in a statement.
“Christmas is the season of giving, not the season of receiving, and it is wrong to try to own and monopolize the title of Queen of Christmas for the purposes of heinous materialism,” Chan added in a statement.
Carey’s fans colloquially referred to her as the Queen of Christmas due to the annual boom in popularity of her 1994 hit “All I Want for Christmas Is You.”
But Chan, who focuses solely on producing Christmas and holiday music, says Carey isn’t the only Christmas queen.
Mariah Carey shares her new Christmas special It is for “all the people who have felt different”.
She continued, “As an independent artist and small business owner, it’s my life’s work to bring people together during the holiday season, which is why I became the Queen of Christmas.” “I wear this title as a badge of honor and with the full understanding that it will – and should be – bestowed on others in the future. My goal in going through this fight was to stand up to brand bullying, not only to protect myself, but also to protect future Queens of Birthday.
If Carey’s trademark filing prevails, the singer may have reasons to ask radio stations and media outlets to cease and desist calling everyone else the “Queen of Christmas,” the statement read. The statement adds that she also could have sued anyone selling a handmade “Christmas Queen” sweater on Etsy.
Chan filed a formal opposition to Curry’s trademark application in August. She has released 12 albums of Christmas and holiday music.
