Migration crisis on the Polish-Belarusian border. Frontex publishes a report on illegal border crossings of the EU

Frontex, the EU border protection agency, has published a report on the migration situation in the European Union, including on the Community’s eastern border. According to preliminary calculations, in the first ten months of 2021, there were approximately 160,000 cases of illegal crossing of the EU’s external borders. This is an increase of nearly 70 percent and almost twice as much as in the same period of 2019, Frontex points out.

“In October, there were nearly 22,800 illegal border crossings on major European migration routes, 30 percent more than in 2020 when the pandemic border restrictions were in place. It’s also 18 percent more than in October 2019 before COVID-19 appeared.” “- we read in the Frontex report.

The agency notes that the greatest increase in these incidents was recorded on “the Eastern, Western Balkan and Central Mediterranean routes, and in Cyprus”. He adds that the number of attempts to illegally enter the European Union via the Western Mediterranean has decreased.
