Mikheil Saakashvili’s health continues to deteriorate. There is a reaction from the Polish Ministry of Foreign Affairs

– I am concerned about the health situation of former Georgian President Mikheil Saakashvili. I hope that he will receive access to the best possible medical care, and when his condition improves, he will be given the opportunity to meet diplomats and representatives of the international community.

– wrote Rau on Friday on Twitter.

Saakashvili has been in a prison hospital in the Georgian capital Tbilisi since November 8. However, he refused treatment, arguing that he had been tricked there. According to the former president, this is aimed at “physically destroying it at Putin’s orders”.

On Friday, the US Department of State also called for Saakashvili to be treated with dignity. “We urge the Georgian government to treat Saakashvili fairly and with dignity” State Department spokesman Ned Price called in a statement. “We also strongly urge the Georgian government to ensure that Saakashvili will be able to participate in all court hearings concerning his pending criminal cases,” he stressed.

Washington also called on the authorities in Tbilisi to “take into account the recommendations of” Saakashvili’s group of doctors “on appropriate treatment.

On October 1, Saakashvili returned to Georgia to – as he said – mobilize his supporters to participate in local elections. On the same day, he was arrested and imprisoned, and the authorities announced that he could not count on pardon or extradition to Ukraine.

The politician returned to Georgia despite the final and binding prison sentences. In the years 2004-2007 and 2008-2013 the president of Georgia was convicted of abuse of power while in office. He himself believes that the criminal cases against him, initiated after opponents from the Georgian Dream party came to power, are politically motivated.

Following his arrest, Saakashvili began a hunger strike at Rustavi prison; considers himself a political prisoner.
