MODOK: the animated series canceled from Hulu

Hulu canceled the series MODOK after one season. The ten-episode season initially aired on Hulu in May 2021 and featured Patton Oswalt as the lead character in MODOK, which stands for Mental Organism Designed Only for Killing.

The show followed the Marvel villain as he attempts to take over the world with his inventive high-tech weapons, all while trying to connect with his children and face a collapsing marriage. During the turmoil, MODOK he also has frequent clashes with Earth’s mightiest heroes and is forced to confront external forces trying to take over his criminal organization. The season ends with an alternate version of MODOK that takes the character into a future where MODOK’s world domination plans have been successful. Not wanting to leave his family behind, MODOK vows to go back in time and save them from death so that he can truly “have it all”.

Together with Oswalt, MODOK. included vocal work by Ben Schwartz, Aimee Garcia, Melissa Fumero, Jon Daly, Sam Richardson, Jon Hamm, and others. The series is created by Oswalt and Jordan Blum, who also served as executive producers. The stop-motion of the series is provided by Stoopid Buddy Stoodios.

MODOK was one of four Marvel animated shows announced for Hulu in 2019 as a group of series that were supposed to lead to a special crossover, The Offenders. Other entries included Hit-Monkey, Howard the Duck and Tigra and Dazzler. The first season of Hit-Monkey launched in November 2021 and features the vocal talent of Fred Tatasciore, Jason Sudeikis, Olivia Munn, George Takei, and others. The show has not yet been renewed for a second season, while Howard the Duck and Tigra and Dazzler have never aired.

The history of MODOK in comics

MODOK has a long history in the Marvel comics, first appearing in 1967’s Tales of Suspense # 93. Created by Stan Lee and Jack Kirby, the character undergoes a medical surgical experiment to increase his intelligence. The experiment causes MODOK to have an abnormally large head, which requires him to use a wheelchair specifically made for mobility. MODOK later kills its creators and takes control of the company that created it, Advanced Idea Mechanics (AIM). He has served as the antagonist to numerous Marvel heroes over the years, including Captain America, the Incredible Hulk, Iron Man, and others.
