“One of the protagonists of journalism and Italian public life for over half a century, a man who has been able to change the face of information in our country, who founded extraordinarily successful newspapers that rewrote the rules of the publishing landscape of our country and who it has given a fundamental impulse to the effort to bring Italy back into the political-institutional framework of a normal European democratic country ”. Thus on the social channels of the Ischia International Journalism Award, the figure of Eugenio Scalfari, founder of Repubblica, who died yesterday at the age of 98, is remembered.
The organizers of the prestigious event write again: “In 1996 Eugenio Scalfari won the Ischia Award, leaving an indelible mark in the history of our event. A few years later this was his memory of the Award and of the island of Ischia: ‘Memory of that evening, beautiful and colorful, with all the wonderful colors of the island, cheered up by the faces of many dear friends and colleagues, during which I was awarded the Prize. One of the very few that I have accepted with joy to receive. And I also remember with great pleasure the beautiful music that Renzo Arbore played and sang for all of us on that festive occasion. Cheerfulness has become a rare commodity these days. Therefore this evening of yours falls very timely: therefore be cheerful, as a good wish for the success of trust and hope ‘”
