The plot of the movie The Son

The film The Son centers on Nicholas (Zen McGrath), the 17-year-old son of a couple whose seemingly amicable divorce actually hasn’t been easy, especially for his mother Kate (Laura Dern). Her father Peter (Hugh Jackman), a budding lawyer who aspires to enter politics, now lives with Beth (Vanessa Kirby) and their new son. At a crucial moment in her life, in which she juggles the new fatherhood and a decisive turning point in her career, Kate shows up to inform him that Nicholas has stopped going to school. Kate doesn’t know why, but the boy is terribly unhappy, and is deeply disturbed by his behavior.

With his parents’ consent, Nicholas moves into his father’s house in the hope that a new school and a new life will help him through a difficult time. Peter and Beth welcome him in the best way, giving him the utmost support and comfort. But when Nicholas’ problems begin to threaten the couple’s stability, summoning the ghosts of Peter’s past, he will find himself having to resolve a situation far more delicate and complex than any legal battle he has ever faced in his profession.

Beth, for her part, feels torn between the sense of loyalty towards Peter, the continuous care to be given to little Theo and the psychological support to be given to a problematic teenager she barely knows. In all this, Nicholas continues to feel desperate and finds momentary relief only in the memory of the simple moments of happiness experienced during his childhood.

When, following the worsening of his depressive state, he attempts to commit suicide, the boy is admitted to the psychiatric ward of a hospital. Beth decides to move in with her mother so she can devote herself to Theo, leaving Peter and Kate to handle the Nicholas situation. From now on, the decisions that will be made will change their lives forever. Following the psychiatrist’s instructions, the two parents give in to their son’s pleas and take him home to Peter’s apartment.

“Suicidal delusions, depression, anxiety, are states of mind that afflict many people,” explained the protagonist and executive producer of the film The Son, Hugh Jackman. “There are many reasons why this happens, but the important thing is to talk about it, you need to have the courage to deal with this issue. I know it’s not easy to open up with friends, so there are many people who suffer in silence”.

Mental health

The Son it is a film that offers a fundamental starting point for this kind of debate,” emphasized Jackman. “When we tell good stories we manage to reach people’s hearts, we help them understand things, not only intellectually, but from every point of view. An authentic story can foster a different dialogue with children, with a spouse, with one’s parents, with friends, even with a stranger on the street. It can make us change the way we look at a homeless person. There is a great need for a different perspective in our society.

The topic of mental health needs to be debated. I’m proud to have been a part of an intelligent film that addresses this subject in such an empathic way

Hugh Jackman

“The subject of mental health is very sensitive,” added the producer Iain Canning, “but it is often avoided. Instead, this film invites an open discussion on this topic. I think it can help remove the barriers that prevent people from being open and honest about their problems in this area. The dynamics resulting from family traumas is not a new idea. I think, though, that now the way we talk about mental health and how we care for others is changing. I hope this film provides a starting point for dialogue on this all-important topic.”
