TikTok is full of (bad) ideas… and the latest is about food. As reported by The Independent, Internet users recommend soaking food in seawater. Like a young woman who films herself dipping her burrata into the sea before tasting it. Last year, singer Rihanna also put her piece of seawater mango. Quickly, the hashtag “dipping a mango in the ocean“had accumulated five million views.

But, why dip his cheese, his piece of bread or his slice of fruit in sea water? According to the followers of this new trend, this would increase the taste of food. However, this invention would have harmful consequences on health. Indeed, seawater can pose a health hazard as the National Ocean Service explains: “Seawater contains salt. When humans drink seawater, their cells absorb water and salt as well. While humans can safely ingest small amounts of salt, the in seawater salt is much higher than what can be processed by the human body“.
Watch out for bacteria
And to complete:Human kidneys can only produce urine that is less salty than salt water. Therefore, to get rid of all the excess salt absorbed by drinking seawater, you must urinate more water than you have drunk. Eventually you will die of dehydration even as you become thirstier.“.
As the Independent website reminds us, soaking food in seawater increases the risk of swallowing bacteria (such as Escherichia coli) or coming into contact with microplastics linked to human pollution.
