The Belenenses team from Lisbon informed in recent days that as many as 17 players are struggling with the coronavirus infection. Despite this fact, the president of the club, Rui Pedro Soares, announced that he would not request that the meeting be postponed. Most likely, he made this decision because he believed that the players would get negative test results by Saturday evening. However, this did not happen.
The result of this situation is the need to play the match against Benfica without any substitutes, moreover, in the starting line-up there were two goalkeepers, one of them, Joao Monteiro, had to play in the field.
The first goal was scored in the 24th second of the game – Kau scored an own goal. Ultimately, Benfica was leading 7-0 until the break, and Haris Seferović (two, including one from the penalty spot), Julian Weigl and Darwin Nunez (3 goals) scored goals.
The hosts for the second part of the game came out … in a seven, and immediately after the first whistle, one of Filipe Candido’s charges reported an injury. As the coach could not let any substitutes onto the pitch, the referee had to interrupt the game – the minimum number of players in one team is seven players.
The Benfica players have won, but it will not be the most proud of their victories. The situation of Belenenses is worried, which, decimated by the coronavirus, had to save itself by surrendering the meeting to avoid embarrassment of enormous dimensions. Let us remind you that before the 2021/2022 season, the NOS League replaced the French Ligue 1 among the five strongest leagues in Europe.
