Oppenheimer: Christopher Nolan’s new film will take place over 45 years | Cinema

Since the first teaser of the Oppenheimerthe new feature film directed by Christopher Nolanwe have not heard substantially more about the expected project.

A film which, even if conceived by the English director together with Universal and not with Warner, the major with which he divorced after years and years of fruitful collaborations, maintains the well-known creative approach to marketing that has practically always characterized every work by Nolan. The teaser is in fact proposed repeatedly with an interminable live broadcast which also signals the countdown that separates us from the release fixed, as known, for July 21, 2023.

Thanks to the intervention made by the legendary costume designer Ellen Mirojnickwhich has collaborations with authors of the caliber of Steven Soderbergh, Paul Verhoeven, Kathryn Bigelow, Steven Spielberg, John Woo on the podcast From tailors with love we can learn some additional curiosities about Oppenheimer.

The costume designer explains that the film will cover a period of time of 45 years, essentially confirming that the underlying story will not focus exclusively on the genesis of the atomic bomb, but on the whole life of the physicist born in 1904 and died in February of 1967 for throat cancer.

Ellen Mirojnick, here in her first collaboration with Nolan, also reveals that she came aboard the production because the filmmaker’s usual costume designer, Jeffrey Kurland, was unavailable due to previous commitments. Talking about her experience, she explains:

It all happened pretty fast, we needed to start shooting pretty fast. What happened was that they had a specific time frame set to shoot the film and so Chris wanted to meet new costume designers, I was one of them.

Then he adds:

Chris demands that you do your best and best that you can do. You have to understand what his ideas are for films and be perfectly able to apply them to every single piece of clothing. He knows every single piece of clothing before it goes thirsty, before the actors begin to move. He’s the one who initiates the whole tone of the film, he’s the one who initiates everything and everything goes through him before you can see him in the film.

Oppenheimer will recount a very important moment of the 1900s: the development of the atomic bomb and the role played by Robert Oppenheimer in the Manhattan project which, during the Second World War, led to the discovery of a technology which was then used, with terrible results, in Japan to carry out the conflict with the, unfortunately, well-known atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki.

In the cast of the film, alongside Cillian Murphy, we find: Florence Pugh (Jean Tatlock), Rami Malek, David Dastmalchian, Emily Blunt (Kitty Oppenheimer), Matt Damon (Lieutenant General Leslie Groves), Robert Downey Jr (Lewis Strauss), Jack Quaid, Matthew Modine, Benny Safdie, Josh Hartnett, Dane DeHaan, Alden Ehrenreich, Alex Wolff, David Krumholtz.
