Lady Gaga, Kristen Stewart, Rachel Zegler are some of the first names to appear in this year’s Oscar-winning attempts by “Variety” magazine. The list of women who are to fight for the golden statuette for the best actress does not end there. In order to emphasize the high level of competition in this category, journalists announce that “there will be a real slaughter”.
As every year, at the end of July, the critics of “Variety”, one of the most important film magazines overseas, present their first Oscar winning types. And as always, they start with the acting category. This year, in their opinion, the fight for the golden statuette among the women in the leading role promises to be particularly promising. And – symptomatic for years – they mainly pay attention to biographical films and creations portraying real characters.
The loudest is about Lady Gaga, who plays the role of Patrizia Reggiani in Ridley Scott’s “House of Gucci”, and about Kristen Stewart, who plays Princess Diana in the production of “Spencer”, directed by Chilean Pablo Larraín.
Lady Gaga in the role of a murderer
Ridley Scott, when he cast Lady Gaga as the beautiful Italian Patrizia Reggiani, stated that she was made for her. However, he did not mean physical similarity (this was taken care of thanks to her great make-up), but her acting temperament.
The film tells the story of the murder of the heir to the Guccio Gucci empire, his grandson, Maurizio Gucci. Maurizio was shot dead on the steps of his own Milan office in 1995. His ex-wife, Patrizia Reggiani, was accused of commissioning the crime. The woman was sentenced to 29 years in prison, but in 2016, after 18 years, she was released. Today, she is 72 years old and has already publicly expressed her outrage at the fact that Lady Gaga, who plays her, “has not contacted her at all”. She is also of the opinion that she should be played by “a much prettier actress”.
Reggiani, who is known to love money more than anything else in the world and spent it as Mrs. Gucci in intimidating amounts, decided to hire a hired murderer after her ex-husband gave her half a million dollars in maintenance annually after her divorce. She stated that she was spending so much in one day. After 10 years in prison, she was offered conditional release, only demanding that she work after her release. She replied, “I haven’t worked a single day in my life, and I don’t think to start now.” And she stayed behind bars for the next 6 years.
Lady Gaga’s film husband was played by Adam Driver.
Let us remind you that the famous singer has already received an Oscar nomination for her role in Bradley Cooper’s “The Birth of a Star”. She also has a golden statuette, which she received for the song “Shallow”, which was composed for this film.
Diana you don’t know
Everyone disappointed with the so far, extremely unsuccessful, film stories about Princess Diana awaits this picture.
“Spencer”, directed by Chilean Pablo Larraín, takes place over three days 1991 at the Sandringham estate in Norfolk. It is then that Diana comes to the conclusion that she must divorce Prince Charles, who – as she felt – made her unhappy from the beginning of the relationship. It is also a chronicle of the last Christmas that Diana spent with the royal family.
“Diana is an extraordinary icon that people around the world loved, admired and empathized with. We decided to enter the story of identity and how a woman voluntarily decides not to be queen. She realizes that she wants to be that kind of woman, what she was before she met Karol “- said the director in an interview with Deadline.com.
The film is now ready, and the few critics who have seen it are enthusiastic about the Kristen Stewart creation. According to Lorrain, the actress proved with her role that “she can be very mysterious and very delicate, and at the same time very strong, and that is what we needed.”
The film will premiere in early September at the Venice Film Festival and it should be remembered that for years this is where the future Oscar winners have started their triumphant parades, such as “The Shape of Water”, “Joker”, and last year “Nomadland”.
Steven Spielberg, classic and genius debutante
Steven Spielberg had been looking into this musical for a decade, although everyone advised him against it. Then the film, although it was ready a year ago, waited for the lifting of pandemic restrictions. Evidently filmed “for an Oscar” – Americans love musicals – even with its December release date, it reminds us of that. (And the closer the gala is to the premiere, the better it is usually for the film).
We all know the 1961 film West Side Story by Robert Wise and Jerome Robbins, starring Natalie Wood and Richard Beymer. Awarded with 10 Oscars, for many the most famous musical in the history of cinema, it is a timeless story about the love of Romeo and Juliet, transferred to the realities of the American suburbs of the 1950s. A touching story, great music and unforgettable songs. It will not be easy for Spielberg to repeat this success.
Fortunately, the creator of “Schindler’s List” did not make a remake of that film, but turned to the Broadway original, written in 1957, with music by Leonard Bernstein. The script was re-written by Tony Kushner and Arthur Laurents, based on that stage version.
The revelation of the musical is supposed to be the role of Maria, Rachel Zegler, a mere 20-year-old beauty with Colombian and – attention – also Polish roots, without any acting achievements. However, she defeated over 30,000 candidates, and after auditioning her, Spielberg immediately decided that she was entrusting her with the role of Maria.
Spielberg’s nod to the 1961 masterpiece is the appearance of Rita Moreno, an Oscar winner in a musical from 60 years ago, in the background.
Will there be slaughter?
Of course, this is not the end of the list of women who will compete for the golden statuette for the best actress at next year’s Oscars. To emphasize the high level of competition in this category, “Variety” even uses the phrase “there will be a real carnage.”
Jennifer Hudson, who plays the (apparently sensational) role of Aretha Franklin in the biographical musical film “Respect” directed by Liesl Tommy, will certainly count in this rate. The actress and singer were personally chosen for the role by Aretha Franklin, who died in 2018. Hudson has already won an Oscar – for a supporting role, also in the musical production “Dreamgirls”.
“Respect” is another title that has waited a year for its premiere and will soon hit theaters. It looks like a big event.
Without a doubt, Frances McDormand will be on the list of potential candidates for an Oscar (it would be her fourth), and in what role! Of course, I’m talking about the role of Lady Macbeth in the black and white film of the actress’s husband, Joel Coen, “The Tragedy of Macbeth”.
Critics are already sharpening their teeth at this position, prophesying that Frances will bring us down. Let us add that none of the living actresses (nor any of the actors) have won four Oscars. This play was only successful for the unforgettable Katherine Hepburn, who died in 2003. Meryl Streep and Frances McDormand can boast of three statuettes.
It promises to be a fascinating competition.
