A moment ago, a patent appeared on the website of the United States Patent and Trademark Office, showing the removable side panels of the PlayStation 5 console. The patent itself is not enough to speak directly about the official sale of the panels, but it suggests that Sony may consider such a move, or at least block it from other panel makers. The trail seems all the more obvious when we present the history of this accessory, which has been sold so far, among others under the Dbrand brand. Namely, Dbrand, selling unofficial alternative panels for the PS5 console to a certain point, had to stop this activity after Sony itself approached the brand.
Replaceable housing panels in PlayStation 5 are not new. It turns out, however, that Sony may want to introduce official panels to the market.
PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series – A year has passed since the premiere of the consoles. Does the new generation meet the expectations of the players?
In the aforementioned letter to Dbrand, Sony did not mention having a patent for the side panels only. However, it was emphasized that such a patent is not required and the mere popularity of the console means that they have exclusive rights to the shape of the side panels. Sony put it as follows: “Thanks to the commercial popularity of the PS5 console and the huge media interest, the unique configuration of the console, including, among others, two vertical housing plates, has become in the minds of consumers only associated with the company [Sony] and has become a symbol of considerable goodwill (PS5 console design with PlayStation trademarks and logos). ”
PlayStation 5 – it will be even more difficult to buy a console. Sony is to reduce the target production of devices
Taking into account the above situation, it is possible that the new patent Sony wanted only just in case to legally protect itself against the creation of further unofficial panels. For some time, however, it has been said on the web that the developers of the console plan to bring new panels for the PS5 to the market in classic black. Additionally, since the brand has already provided gamers with multi-colored DualSense controllers and the same PS5 Pulse headphones, what’s standing in the way of doing the same with consoles?
