Pope arrives in Lisbon, where controversy erupts over WYD costs

A giant carpet made of counterfeit 500-euro notes stretches across the top of the stage on which Pope Francis will celebrate the closing ceremony of World Youth Day (WYD) in the Portuguese capital this Sunday. On the sidelines of the huge Catholic gathering – which should welcome at least one million young Christians – symbols of protest follow each other on the streets of Lisbon to denounce public investment around the demonstration, Portuguese artist Bordalo’s ephemera II, like the carpet, was installed last Thursday and widely distributed on social networks.
