Power engineering. Climate package. Comments by Jacek Sasin and Zbigniew Ziobro

Pekao analysts have calculated the price Poland will have to pay for the Fit for 55 package. The EU climate package is to cost us EUR 527.5 billion. The government cannot agree to the ruin package – assessed the head of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Zbigniew Ziobro, referring to the Pekao bank report. – If the current increases in electricity prices, felt so much by Poles, cause a shock, what will happen in the coming years? – said the Deputy Prime Minister, Minister of State Assets Jacek Sasin.

“Shocking report by Bank Pekao in DGP. The EU climate package is to cost us EUR 527.5 billion! The plan of the Eurocrats led by Donald Tusk is to impoverish Poles and make the Polish economy a hostage to the rich West. The Polish government cannot agree to the ruin package “- wrote Ziobro on Twitter on Tuesday.

Jacek Sasin on the costs of transformation

Earlier, Jacek Sasin, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of State Assets, spoke about the costs of the package.

“This cost is shocking, it may even reach PLN 2.4 trillion by 2030. It is as much as PLN 900 billion more compared to the scenario of emission reduction by 40% (Fit for 40)” – said Sasin. “To illustrate this data even better, I would like to add that the total cost for each Polish citizen will be about PLN 64,000,” he added. “So if the current increases in electricity prices, felt so much by Poles, cause a shock, what will happen in the coming years? After all, this cannot be calculated in any way. We are aware that rising energy prices are one of the costs of our membership in European Union. But today the price is too high “- assessed the Deputy Prime Minister.

He admitted that Poland is facing a huge challenge related to the necessity to carry out a costly reconstruction of the Polish power industry. “Today, our energy sector is 70% based on coal. Meanwhile, the EU does not expect any cosmetic changes from us, but a gigantic and extremely costly revolution. In my opinion, the cost of the climate package cannot be borne by Poles” – assessed Sasin. He noted that the Pekao data “clearly shows that the cost of decarbonisation in 2021-2030 will be about PLN 256 thousand per family of four”. “With such money you can buy an apartment on the secondary market in a medium-sized city in Poland. These calculations make us verify the current position” – he admitted.

Fit for 55. “Dziennik Gazeta Prawna” on the cost of the package

“Dziennik Gazeta Prawna” announced on Tuesday that it had reached the estimates prepared by Pekao SA bank analysts, which show the costs of the Fit for 55 package. The article indicated that Fit for 55 increased the target of reducing greenhouse gas emissions in the EU by 2030 from 40 up to 55 percent compared to the level from 1990. “Compared to the current EU regulations, the implementation of the EU climate package Fit for 55 will cost Poland approximately EUR 190 billion more” – reads the article.

It added that the introduction of a more ambitious climate package, increasing the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions at the same time to 55%, would also increase costs – to EUR 527.5 billion. “The difference between the packages, amounting to almost EUR 190 billion, results, among other things, from the significant increase in the costs of the ETS (emissions trading system),” we read.

“It should be remembered, however, that the new climate package will also generate higher revenues for Poland. We are talking about an amount of almost EUR 220 billion, coming mainly from emission allowances, as well as the EU Reconstruction Fund and the EU’s multiannual financial framework. Nevertheless, this still means a gap in in the amount of approx. EUR 300 billion “- it was noted.

On the account of the Pekao Bank’s Analysis team, we can read that “The # Fitfor55 package is an extremely ambitious challenge in the pursuit of climate neutrality. Although not so ambitious that the Polish economy could not cope with it. We estimated the cost range by 2030. “- Posted on Twitter.

According to the “DGP” information, the calculations of Pekao analysts were discussed at the December informal meeting of the government and sparked heated discussions.
