Pride Month: LGBTQ + milestones in the history of design

1993: Jonathan Adler launches his first pottery collection at Barneys New York. Later he will create a home design empire.

1993: The Broadway debut of Angels in America makes a sensation. Lighting and scenography designers are nominated for Tony Awards.

1993: Alice Austen’s home, which has been home to the lesbian photographer and her partner for 50 years, is declared a National Historic Landmark.

2000: Nate Berkus becomes a star ofOprah Winfrey Show.

2003: Queer Eye for the Straight Guy, with design expert Thom Filicia, it premieres and is an unexpected success.

2004: Charles Renfro becomes partner of Diller Scofidio + Renfro. The studio will design the High Line (2009), the Broad Museum in Los Angeles (2015) and the Hudson Yards Shed (2019).

2007: Triangle Square Apartments opens in Hollywood – 104 affordable housing units for LGBT seniors – the first such complex in the country. Similar projects follow in Chicago and Philadelphia in 2014 and New York in 2018.

2016: It opens in New York the AIDS Memorial, designed by Studio AI Architects and artist Jenny Holzer. It commemorates the more than 100,000 inhabitants of the city who died of the disease.

2018: The first national monument to LGBT people, designed by artist Anthony Goicolea, is inaugurated in Hudson River Park in New York.

2019: Leong Leong and Killefer Flammang Architects complete the first of a series of spaces for the Los Angeles LGBT Center. The 6,700-square-foot project in Hollywood takes up nearly an entire block and serves more people than any other LGBT center in the world.

2019: New York City Council proposes that the city’s LGBT Center be placed on the list of landmarks for its historical significance.

Summer 2019: It is celebrated on 50th anniversary of the Stonewall riotspartly in New York and partly in the building where it all began.
