The prime minister reported that during the conversation with Macron, he spoke of fears related to “several phenomena occurring simultaneously today”, which – he added – commented extensively with the president of France. – And, importantly, the president emphasized several times that we have a very similar view of these risks, the phenomena that take place around us – said Morawiecki.

– Let me summarize them very briefly. On the one hand, of course, this is the situation on our eastern border with Belarus, which is at the same time the eastern border of NATO (…) and the eastern border of the Union. By defending it, we are also defending the EU, he said. He thanked French partners, as well as other partners in the EU, for their words of solidarity and support for the activities carried out by Poland to defend the eastern border of the EU.

The prime minister also spoke about the gathering of Russian military units around Ukraine and about gas blackmail, leading to an increase in gas prices throughout Europe. He reported that he had spoken with Macron also about “a special Russian weapon, which is unfortunately propaganda (…) hacker attacks, cybercrime”.
– All these actions should meet with one answer – this answer is the solidarity approach of the entire EU. I am glad that I see this solidarity approach during my talks, which are a continuation of our diplomatic offensive, so to speak, from a few weeks ago, he said.

During the conference, the head of the Polish government was asked whether the conversation with the French president concerned new sanctions that could be imposed on Belarus, and whether any possible sanctions that could be agreed upon by all leaders emerge during the talks with European leaders so far.
– We are also talking about how to prevent various aggressive actions by Russia and Belarus in the future. In this case, we are also talking about sanctions, we are talking about strengthening sanctions – replied Morawiecki.
The prime minister also recalled the activities of Polish diplomacy towards airlines that actively participated in the procedure of bringing migrants “at the dictation of Lukashenka”. – Our actions led to a withdrawal and this withdrawal by a few steps – he stressed. – Even the threat of sanctions was effective – he added.
– We want to relieve this tension, but if there is an escalation on the other side, on the Belarusian side – then we are ready on this escalation ladder, we are also ready to go up – said Morawiecki. – An example of this is economic sanctions – the closure of the border, the closure of border crossings for freight and rail traffic. Unfortunately, we will use this escalation ladder if these attacks intensify, he added.
