Problems with the availability of the PlayStation 5 have been dragging on for a long time. Sony, wanting to deal with the shortage of hardware, decided to extend the production of the older generation of consoles.

Sony will be producing new copies of PlayStation 4 throughout 2022. Originally it was planned to end production at the end of last year, however the company said its continuation would fill the supply shortage and keep players in the PlayStation ecosystem. Problems with the availability of the PS5 include because the production of modern chips, which are a key element of the console, is much more difficult due to the pandemic. The older generation uses less advanced components, making it simpler to manufacture and a budget-friendly alternative to the PS5.

As PlayStation boss Jim Ryan saidSony would like to focus all its processing power on the latest console, but the coronavirus pandemic is slowing down production processes in the gaming industry, while increasing the demand for equipment. This made even the most basic components missing. Sony hopes that producing more PS4s will ease the pressure on PS5 production. The company plans to produce around one million new PS4s per year, with the ability to adjust the number of units based on demand.

The PlayStation 4 is one of the best-selling consoles in history to date with 116 million units sold. However, the platform was created in 2013 and after almost ten years, the jump to the new generation is quite necessary. Interestingly, while games remain Sony’s biggest source of revenue, the company is also preparing to release a new virtual reality kit to use future games and applications in a metaverse, and is considering launching its own electric vehicle sales.
