Racist insults and controversies in Ischia for a mural by Jorit, a work that depicts a woman of African origin that the Neapolitan artist is currently making outside a school.
The street artist originally from Quarto and famous for his murals by Maradona and Lucio Dalla is decorating the facade of the Buchner state high school in Ischia Porto, as part of the Scuola Viva project of the Campania region.
Yesterday afternoon, however, a photo of the work circulated on a chat with the words “Let’s start to set up the vandalization committee for this shameful mural” which in a short time was spread causing the reaction of the artist himself (who commented on the story from his social profiles) and many people from Ischia, several of whom wanted to testify to their dissent towards the gesture and show solidarity with Jorit in person, while he is still at work at the Ischia school.
The reaction of the principal of the island high school Assunta Barbieri on the official profile of the institute was also immediate: “Reading those arrogant and hateful words left me breathless. However, I am sure that our community is solid and that it will be able to react by giving the right answers. I can only apologize to Jorit and thank him for the marvelous work of art and for the unique and unrepeatable show he is giving us ”.
In the meantime, an investigation has been opened on the matter by the Ischia State Police.
Jorit himself has made it known that his original post in which he talks about this story has been obscured due to “a rain of reports” and has republished it by amending the parts that had caused the obscuring. “I realize – explains Jorit – that a part of the world has still remained the color of the skin as a discriminating factor”.
