Riots in Kazakhstan. ODKB are withdrawing from Kazakhstan

The Collective Security Treaty organization led by Russia started withdrawing “peacekeepers” from Kazakhstan. They entered the country after the outbreak of riots against the governments in Astana. The facilities, protected by the contingent, are handed over to Kazakh soldiers.

The Russian Defense Ministry said on Thursday that “the transfer of significant objects is proceeding according to a plan developed by the forces of the Collective Security Treaty Organization (ODKB) and the Russian Ministry of Defense.” Preparations for loading military equipment on board the planes have also started. “The return of the ODKB peacekeepers to their countries will be organized in cooperation with the Kazakh side,” announced the Russian Ministry of Defense.


The withdrawal of troops will take ten days

More than 2,000 troops from Russia, Armenia, Tajikistan, Kyrgyzstan and Belarus arrived in Kazakhstan on January 6 at the request of the President of Kazakhstan, Kasym-Żomart Tokayev. According to the announcements, these forces were to ensure the protection of key administrative and military facilities after the anti-government demonstrations and riots that broke out in Kazakhstan on 2 January.

Tokayev announced on Wednesday that the peace mission of the ODKB forces had been completed. Their withdrawal is to take 10 days.

The ODKB is a military-political bloc created after the collapse of the USSR, which includes, in addition to Russia, Belarus, Armenia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan.

Composed of the so-called of the ODKB peace mission to Kazakhstan, among others units of the Russian airborne forces. Belarus sent a company of peacekeepers from the airborne brigade to this Central Asian state. Kyrgyzstan sent an approx. 150-strong squad of special forces soldiers, Armenia – 100 of its troops, and Tajikistan – an approx. 200-strong battalion.

Protests after rising fuel prices

The protests in Kazakhstan broke out on January 2 and were initially associated with a double increase in LPG prices, but over time they expanded and acquired a political character. Massive acts of aggression and vandalism took place in Almaty. Authorities announced that it was a coup attempt led by “armed fighters”.
