1. Drugs and imprisonment
In the 90s it was loud not only about the roles of Downey Jr., but most of all about his addictions. The actor had problems with alcohol, drugs (heroin, cocaine, marijuana) and bipolar disorder. Unfortunately, this led to conflicts with the law.
At the turn of 1999 and 2000, RDJ spent several months in prison. Reason? It was the culmination of offenses (before that, he had been arrested several times before, avoiding mandatory drug tests ordered earlier), but also for possession of heroin and cocaine and escaping drug addiction.
2. Martial arts
As we already mentioned, the actor struggled with drug addiction for years. Unfortunately, the treatments and rehabs were not working. Robert Downey Jr. he already had a bad reputation in Hollywood and simply did not want to work with him or were afraid to work with him for financial reasons. The breakthrough came in 2003, which was due to several factors. The actor tried his hand at martial arts, and more precisely in one of the wushu styles – Wing Chun. In order to start training, he went to Eric Oram, the founder of a special school in Los Angeles. The beginnings were not easy, RDJ even skipped training, but with time the new activity brought profits. After a year, the actor was in a completely different place in his life. This is what he told about it in an interview with Oprah Winfrey:
Martial arts were … I can’t describe in words how much they’ve made me stay healthy and focused. This is a spiritual training. It allowed me to stand firmly on the ground and build the main goal of promoting a sense of spirituality and respect for my community. To be ready to defend yourself and this community – if necessary.
Robert Downey Jr. he did not stop training after reaching sobriety and winning over addiction. Wing Chun has become his passion, which he continues to develop.
3. Susan Levin is the mainstay of the actor
In 2003, on the set of the film Gothic he met Susan Levin who also worked in production. At first, the woman rejected his amorous advances twice, but the actor was adamant and very much in love. Later, after a two-year engagement, Susan and Robert were married at the Hamptons (Robert’s favorite vacation spot) in August 2005. A few years before getting the role Charlie Chaplin, the actor bought the former house of the legend of silent cinema. The property is located in Hollywood Hills and its area is 382 square meters. It has three bedrooms and five bathrooms. Robert Downey Jr. he lived there in 1989–1994.
