Robert Downey Jr. will not only return as Sherlock Holmes, but also plan with his wife Susan and Warner Bros. create a movie and series universe of this iconic character.

“Sherlock Holmes 3” – when is the premiere? Robert Downey Jr. again in the title role

So far, the American actor played the role of the famous detective in two films: The 2009 Sherlock Holmes and 2011’s Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows. Both titles were produced by Warner Bros. together over $ 1 billion revenues in the global box office. The premiere of the third film in the series is scheduled for December 22, 2021. However, you should not be too attached to this date, because the premiere of the fourth part of “The Matrix”, also created by Warner Bros., was postponed to this date yesterday.

Sherlock Holmes universe – what are the plans?

During a panel discussion at the Fast Company Innovation Festival, Robert Downey Jr. and his wife Susan Downey announced that “talks are underway” for the third film in the series to start the Sherlock Holmes universe. Downey Jr. has played the role of Tony Stark / Iron Man in the Marvel Cinematic Universe for years, so he knows the formula of building a cinematic universe. The Sherlock Universe would be developed in collaboration with Warner Bros. and include cinema films and small screen productions for a streaming service HBO Max. Susan Downey said:

We could settle for one movie, but we think there is a chance to expand it further. We want to prepare new titles for HBO and HBO Max about the characters from the third film. We have big plans, but they are expensive. Their implementation requires a lot of effort and coordination. Remember that the MCU was not created in one day.

Robert Downey Jr. added that he and his wife do not want to repeat what has already been written. As he emphasized, there is currently no other universe of this type, and Arthur Conan Doyle created a product that also finds its customers today.
