Gauff wins US Open and gets a message from Federer
Before the US Open, Gauff had won titles in Washington and Cincinnati.
While many thought Gauff had a strong chance of winning the US Open, some thought the American was not really capable of holding a major tournament at Flushing Meadows. “After defeating Sabalenka, Gauff sent a strong message to her opponents.”Thank you to those who did not believe in me.
A month ago I won the 500 title (Washington, DC) and people said I would stop there. Two weeks ago I won the 1000 title (Cincinnati) and people were saying it was the biggest result I could get.
Three weeks later, here I am with this trophy. So, honestly, for those who thought they were adding fuel to my fire, you really added fuel to the fire. And now I’m burning really badly.
I felt like people were saying ‘Oh, she’s climaxed and that’s it. It was all propaganda. I see the comments. People don’t think I see them, but I see them.
I’m very aware of tennis on Twitter. I know your usernames, so I know who’s talking nonsense,” Gauff said.
