General information about the game
On the official Steam website we can read:
“Lead a team of League of Legends heroes, explore Bilgewater, raise the sails, and set course to the Shadow Isles to uncover the mysteries of the deadly Black Fog. Developed by Airship Syndicate and in the style of legendary comic book creator Joe Madureira – creators of Battle Chasers and Darksiders – Ruined King: A League of Legends Story ™ is the first Riot Forge game to encourage players to delve into the League of Legends universe. In this addictive turn-based RPG, players can freely choose their team and lead an unusual group of League of Legends heroes, explore the bustling city of Bilgewater and the mysterious Shadow Isles, and experience the Avenue of Initiative system. “
– we read on the game card on Steam.
It’s hard to disagree with this description. Ruined King is a typical RPG, but set in the League universe. We can find here all the characteristic features of this type of game, i.e. an interesting story, unique heroes and an engaging atmosphere.
Ruined King’s graphics and gameplay – impressions
The main screen of the game looks inviting. The player should choose the profile and the difficulty level, there are 4 to choose from:
The choice of options depends, among other things, on the difficulty of the battles with the enemies. I admit that I like challenges, so at the beginning I played the “veteran”.
Ruined King’s artwork shows off perfectly. The cartoon style is not too sugary or dark. It just fits into the world of League of Legends. The creators took care of details and details. The area is full of chambers, chests and nooks and crannies that are worth visiting. Character dialogs presented correctly appear in important places as well short cutscenes in the form of cartoons. The whole gives the impression of being well-polished and coherent. The plot is well woven into the gameplay.
Control is carried out with standard keys as in RPG games – i.e. WSAD or with the mouse. In the lower right corner of the screen there is a menu with three shortcuts:
- Q – it is possible to see the hero,
- M – map,
- The middle mouse button is used to view the terrain.
In the middle of the bottom panel, there are the hero’s main stats, such as health and mana, and the main skill that can be activated with the spacebar and the mouse. Here you can also see the inventory icon that can be turned on with the 0 key.
Of course, the player’s task is to fulfill the designated missions, which have been appropriately marked on the map. I can fault the fact that this one cannot be seen immediately on the screen, but we have to turn it on with the key. The hero’s wandering around the map is probably the most enjoyable area of the game. We visit various chambers, corridors and talk with other characters. It is worth searching chests, trunks or jugs – there are often gold or potions that will help heal the damaged red belt of the hero.
During the exploration of the area, battles with opponents await the hero. These, however, look quite specific and in my opinion this is the worst part of the game.
Fighting opponents – it’s average
We start the fight by coming into contact with enemies and at important moments in the plot. Then the heroes will be lined up on opposite sides of the screen – something like skirmishes in Heroes of Might and Magic 3.
During fights, skills are displayed, an initiative bar that shows the order in which heroes can move, and hero and enemy stats. Skills are divided into immediate (consumes no mana) and lane (using them costs mana). After each victorious fight, we receive loot, e.g. gold, and our hero receives experience.
I admit that I don’t really like this combat system. While the skills are interesting, the concept is a bit boring and something is missing. This is a completely different story than in the case of HoMM3. They are news avenues during the fight. The player can change them, thanks to which the hero’s powers have slightly different statistics. The avenue of speed, the avenue of balance, and the avenue of power are available.
More heroes join Miss Fortune during the game. The first is the priestess Illaoi, who first has separate missions to complete. To her Braum would join in time.
I will not spoil any more. You have to check this story for yourself. However, it is worth noting that the main plot concerns the search for Gankplank, one of the heroes of League of Legends who lives in Bilgewater. While searching for him, we also meet Pyke. The plot and characters fit perfectly into the game world. The story seems to be coherent and interesting. League of Legends fans will feel at home here, but a novice will also easily “grasp” the main plot.
Ruined King – general impressions
I liked the game from the very first moments for the graphics that catch the eye and make the player want to plunge into this wonderful world. From the very first moment, the story I began to discover also interested me. It is interesting to explore the map and learn about the fate of the heroes who successively join the stake. Unfortunately, fighting enemies is the worst part of gameplay. It is average and can be just boring at times.
