Russia complains about US nuclear weapons exercises. Pentagon commentary

Russia’s defense minister said that in November, US bombers were practicing to launch a nuclear attack on Russia from two different directions. These planes were to be located 20 kilometers from the Russian border. The Pentagon – referring to the allegations of the Russian side – informed that the exercises conducted at the border with Russia were publicly announced and were conducted in accordance with international protocols.

Moscow accused the USA, NATO and Ukraine of “provocative and irresponsible behavior” – pointing to the US-led arms supplies to Ukraine, Kiev by the use of drones against Turkish-backed separatists by Russia on the Eastern Ukraine, and conducting exercises near the borders of NATO.

Russia’s Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu was quoted by the agency TASS, he said during Tuesday’s video conference with Defense Minister of China Wei Fenghe that Moscow “recorded a significant increase in the activity of US strategic bombers”, which – as described – “performed in November 30 flights near the borders of Russia” . The head of Russia’s defense ministry said it was more than two times more such operations than in the same period last year.

Shoygu on “a simulated US nuclear attack on Russia”. The Pentagon replies

The main complaints were that the US was carrying out “a simulated US nuclear attack on Russia” this month. “Shoygu stressed that this month, during the US military exercise Global Thunder, 10 US strategic bombers practiced the variant of using nuclear weapons against Russia practically simultaneously from the western and eastern directions,” the TASS agency reported.

The Russian side stressed that the American bombers had been sighted approximately 20 kilometers from the border with Russia.

The Pentagon refutes Russia’s allegations. – These missions have been publicly announced and well planned with the command of strategic European command, allies and partners to ensure maximum training opportunities and integration, as well as compliance with all national and international requirements and protocols – said Pentagon spokesman Colonel Anton Semelroth.

“Moscow’s accusations come at a time of high tension in relations with Washington over Ukraine, as US officials express concerns about a possible Russian attack on its southern neighbor,” Reuters reported.

Global Thunder is an annual nuclear exercise by the US Strategic Command to test and demonstrate the readiness of US nuclear capabilities. This year, during the exercises, the capabilities of B-52 bombers capable of carrying nuclear weapons were tested.
