While it is hard to imagine today that anyone other than Laurence Fishburne plays Morpheus in The Matrix, numerous rumors have it that Sean Connery’s involvement was considered to play this character. However, as Chris Evangelista from SlashFilm recalls, delving into the story reveals that Connery was offered a much better suited role, which he rejected anyway – due to an overly complicated script.
“Matriks”. Sean Connery may have become an Architect, but …
Sean Connery was to appear not in the first but the second part of “The Matrix” as the Architect, the father of the entire system and one of the main antagonists of the series. When we recall the distinctive appearance of Helmut Bakaitis, who was hired for the role of the Architect, the offer made to Connery definitely makes more sense than the idea that one of the role played by Agent 007 should become Morpheus.
Chris Evangelista says Connery quit joining the cast of “The Matrix” because of a script he didn’t understand. He is not the only one – a few years ago Will Smith said that he was the first candidate to play the role of Neo, but it was also difficult for him to bite into the vision of the Wachowski sisters. The actor’s account from 2019 shows that the laconically presented concept of “Matrix” did not appeal to him, so instead of working with the Wachowski he decided to make “Wild Wild West”. It quickly turned out to be one of the worst decisions Keanu Reeves had ever taken advantage of in his career.
If the developers’ plans are successful, the fourth installment of the “Matrix” series will be released before the end of this year. Keanu Reeves, Carrie-Anne Moss and Jada Pinkett-Smith have re-entered their roles; in addition to them, the cast of the long-awaited film was joined, among others, by Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, Neil Patrick Harris, Jonathan Groff, Christina Ricci and Priyanka Chopra. The plot is shrouded in strict secrecy – we keep our fingers crossed so that the film can be released without further delays.
