Shakira risks arrest. Cause: 14.5 million euros

Barcelona Court considers that there are strong indications that crimes of tax fraud were committed

Shakira even goes to court and could face a prison sentence for various crimes of tax fraud. According to El Mundo, the artist is accused of defrauding the Spanish tax authority of 14.5 million euros. The decision was handed down by the Court of Barcelona, which rejected the appeal presented by the singer.

The crimes were allegedly committed between 2012 and 2014 and everything indicates that the Public Prosecutor’s Office, which denounced the case and launched an investigation, will ask for a prison sentence and a fine. The years of the sentence have not yet been revealed.

According to the Spanish newspaper, the judge in charge rejected the appeal, considering that there are strong indications that crimes of fraud were committed – by Shakira and her tax officer – that damaged the Spanish treasury in millions of euros.

To evade paying these taxes, the singer tried to pretend she didn’t live in Spain and hid her income through a network of tax havens in British Virgin Islands, the Cayman Islands, Malta, Panama and Luxembourg. Shakira’s name was one of those listed in the Panama Papers.

Shakira reportedly used offshore companies to manage her music business, which led to the opening of an investigation in Spain. In July 2021, a judge ruled that the singer should go to court for not having paid taxes in the country, which were due. The artist’s public relations agency made it known at the time that she paid the amount as soon as she was informed of this debt.
