Shooting at Iowa high school

Perry Township, Iowa, police reported shooting in school The middle school in that town. It was unclear whether anyone was killed, but local media reported that someone had been shot and wounded.

“There are a lot of speculative numbers,” Perry Mayor Dirk Cavanaugh said when asking about possible victims.

“We still don’t have confirmation of the number of people involved,” Kavanaugh said.

Police received the first call reporting the shooting at 7:37 a.m. Authorities had access to the school’s surveillance cameras and said they saw an incident in one of the hallways.

A large number of emergency vehicles arrived at the scene and several streets around the building were blocked off. A medical helicopter was seen landing at the school around 8:30 this morning.

City spokesman Chris Cohea said nearby elementary schools were closed and all students remained in classrooms.

Thursday is the first day back for students after the December break.

Perry is located about 40 miles northwest of the capital, Des Moines.

Around 8:50 a.m., parents began arriving to look for students.

Erica Jolliff said her ninth-grade daughter ran from campus at 7:45 a.m. An hour later, Jolliffe was distraught, still looking for her son, Amir, who was in sixth grade.

“I just wanted to know if he was okay,” Jolliffe said. “They didn’t tell me anything.”

The shooting occurred against the backdrop of the Iowa caucuses, not far from where Republican candidates are campaigning.

Phone messages left for the Perry School Board president and vice president and an email left for Superintendent Clark Weeks were not immediately returned.

The Dallas County Emergency Management Agency said a new meeting will be held later in the morning.
