Slap by Will Smith, the Academy’s response: “We do not condone violence”

The Academy has released an official statement following the bad episode live at the Oscars involving Chris Rock and Will Smith. After a comment from the comedian towards Smith’s wife, Jada Pinkett Smith, the King Richard star took the stage to slap his colleague.

In a Twitter post, the Academy said:“The Academy does not condone violence in any form. Tonight we are delighted to celebrate the winners of the 94th Academy Awards, who deserve this moment of recognition from their peers and film lovers around the world.”.

After taking the stage and hitting Rock with a slap, Will Smith returned to his seat continuing to utter disrespectful words towards his colleague.
Chris Rock was at that moment on stage presenting the Best Documentary category – Summer of Soul award – when he mentioned thealopecia from which Jada Pinkett Smith suffersindicating how she was ready to join the Soldier Jane sequel, referencing Demi Moore’s character’s shaved head in the film.

Jada Pinkett Smith had talked about her alopecia problem in the past, saying she was ready to live with it.
According to a statement from the LAPD, Chris Rock would have decided to do not file a complaint against Will Smith.
