Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, Rachel Zegler: “I was terrified” • TAG24

He confessed this during the presentation of the remake of “Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs” at D23, Rachel Zeglerwho in the Disney live-action plays the role of the protagonist: “I was afraid of the original cartoon”.

Rachel Zegler’s statements about the cartoon

Guest of D23 Expo, Disney’s biennial fair event, Rachel Zeglerknown to the general public for having starred in films such as West Side Story by Steven Spielberg and now protagonist of the new live-action dedicated to “Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs”, confessed that she was not a fan of the cartoon as a child. “I was afraid of the original cartoon – said the actress, who then explained:

I think I saw it once as a child and then never took it back. I’m serious, I’m not kidding, I saw it once because it scared me. Then once I went for a ride to Disney World and there was an attraction called ‘The Scary Adventures of Snow White’ and the name doesn’t sound like something a child would like! I was terrified of it, I decided that I would never see Snow White again. You got over this fear, I think, around sixteen, seventeen.

A real trauma for Zegler, who was then offered the leading role in Disney remake inspired by the 1937 animated film. A role that she had not been able to refuse: “It is incredible to be an iconic princess – she said. Being the first Disney princess is a big responsibility and I feel a lot of pressure. It’s incredible”. The filming of the film has meanwhile finished and the film, as announced during the Californian convention, will be released on March 22, 2024.

“Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs”: what we know about the Disney remake

It’s called “Snow White”, the Disney live-action inspired by the 1937 classic “Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs”, the first animated feature film in history, based on the tale of the same name by the Brothers Grimm. Rachel Zegler will take on the role of the protagonist, while Gal Gadot, heroine in Wonder Women, she will play the Evil Queen. Also in the cast Andrew Burnapwho will be Jonathan, a new character in love with Snow White, and Martin Klebba, in the role of Grumpy. The direction was instead entrusted to Marc Webbwho has already directed the films of The Amazing Spider-Man and will be based on the script of Erin Cressida Wilson And Greta Gerwignominated for an Academy Award for Best Non-Original Screenplay with Little Women in 2020 and coming out in theaters with Barbie together with Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling in 2023. But last year the controversy was sparked by the choice of the Latin actress for the role of Snow White: for some fans it would have been a distortion of the traditional white representation of the princess. A controversy that recalls the recent social discontent for Halle Bailey’s black Ariel and to which Zegler had replied in an interview to Variety in early 2022:

Never, not even in a million years, would I have imagined having such a chance. You don’t normally see Snow White of Latin American origin, although the story is much loved in Spanish-speaking countries. Snow White is a huge icon, whether it’s the Disney cartoon or other versions of the Brothers Grimm story or derivative works. But there are no people my looks with that kind of role. When the announcement was made […] people were really angry. We must love them by leading them in the right direction.
