Kendall Jenner took to the streets of Los Angeles in leather pants and an orange top. A few days later, her half-sister Kim Kardashian presented an almost identical set. Since the most powerful women in the world wear them, they will soon find their way into each of us’ wardrobes.
Tube top, commonly known as boob tube, dates back to the first half of the 20th century. Back then it was a bikini top. Two decades later, thanks to the 19-year-old entrepreneur Eli Tahari, he moved from a sandy beach to the streets of the metropolis. The boy came to New York from Israel with a hundred dollars in his pocket. He accidentally found his way to clothing stores, the owner of which was selling a defective factory batch of tops, then still meaningless scraps of fabric. The clever young man smelled the business. He spent all his savings buying the entire mintage of inconspicuous tops, and started selling with a 200% break. Soon, bandage shirts were worn by almost all East Village residents, later Studio 54 regulars and the rest of the world.
They reached their peak of popularity at the turn of the 90s and 2000s, when in combination with hipsters (preferably low enough to show untanned bikini parts or at least thin strings of thongs), they became the uniform of the then it-girls – from Cameron Diaz and Jennifer Aniston to Christina Aguilera and Britney Spears. The Tube top even appeared in a slightly conservative Cynthia Nixon-style wardrobe, with her serial friend Carrie Bradshaw wearing one top after another on the silver screen. Tubas were also present at fashion shows. In 1999, Kate Moss walked down the runway of the Versace spring / summer collection in a strapless T-shirt. That season, beige bandages were also used by Calvin Klein and Prada.
Back in fashion
With the current shift to 70s, 90s and 2000s fashion, and therefore bralettes, corsets and ribbed T-shirts, it was only a matter of time before tube tops came back. Kendall Jenner put on pants with slightly flared legs and alabaster sandals with an orange T-shirt painted in psychedelic patterns. A few days later Kim Kardashian joined the model. The founder of the SKIMS brand was spotted in front of a popular restaurant in the City of Angels in a burgundy tube top with a python imitation texture from the archives of the Dolce & Gabbana fashion house.
From March, we also see bandage tops on the Instagram profiles of Scandinavian influencers. In Denmark, one-color sets made of patent eco-leather from Rotate Birger Christensen dominate, which consist of straight-leg trousers, jackets with a cut reminiscent of the disco era and boob tube. The founders of the brand, Janette Madsen and Thor Valdimars, as well as stylist Anna Winck and model Nina Marker already have in their wardrobes the sets in milky yellow and blood red. The return of the tube tops was seen during the 2021 spring / summer fashion weeks. The black minimalistic straps appeared on the catwalk by Chanel and Hermès, and at Blumarine they appeared in mesh trimmed with strings of bling beads worn in combination with a contrasting cardigan and fur purse.
Here are our suggestions from popular brands and designers:
RtA: To conquer New York
Two years ago, Katie Holmes unleashed a cashmere fever in the Khaite twin. Therefore, this season we will replace the bralette with a headband. The cashmere tube top in a shade of ivory can be found, among others in the offer of the RtA brand.
Alessandra Rich: Crystals
For the 2014 CFDA gala, Rihanna chose a dress designed by Adam Selman, made of 230,000 Swarovski crystals. – Are my tits bothering you? They’re covered in Swarovski crystals, girl! RiRi replied to the journalist who had asked her about the lack of a bra. Just like diva pop, let’s choose a shimmering top from Alessandra Rich.
Ann Demeulemeester: Like a supermodel
In October last year, Hailey Bieber sparkled in a tube dress designed by Magda Butrym. In this spirit, we chose a matching boob tube from Ann Demeulemeester, which can be supplemented with expressive accessories or kept in a muted twist.
The Attico: For a bow
The Italian brand’s offer includes tube tops trimmed with sequins just like in the movie “The Rhythm of the Night”, and topped with ostrich feathers, like from the Rio de Janeiro carnival. The most universal model will be made of draped fabric, which is arranged in a scaled bow.
Mango: True to the classics
The knitted Mango top will be the perfect base for any outfit – leather, cashmere or even denim, just like Bella Hadid wears them. There is also a version of a denim top similar to Britney Spears’ corset gown from the 2001 American Music Awards.
