Sven-Goran Eriksen says he has ‘about a year’ to live

(CNN) — Former England manager Sven-Goran Eriksson revealed to Swedish radio station P1 on Thursday that he has terminal cancer and only has “about a year” left to live.

CNN previously learned from sources close to Erickson that Erickson had been diagnosed with pancreatic cancer.

According to Reuters, the Swede told P1: “Everyone can see that I have a bad disease, everyone thinks it’s cancer, and it is. But I have to fight it as long as possible .”

“I know the best-case scenario is about a year and the worst-case scenario is even less.”

“I don’t think my doctors are completely sure, they can’t give it a day.”

In a separate interview with the BBC, Eriksen said he learned he had cancer when he was first hospitalized for “five mini-strokes.” He said he was told the cancer was inoperable.

The veteran football coach is best known for his work as coach of the England national team.

Eriksen coached England’s so-called “golden generation”, working with stars such as David Beckham, Wayne Rooney, Steven Gerrard, Frank Lampard and Rio Ferdinand to win Won two World Cups and one European Cup.

The Swede is the first foreign coach to coach England. Under Eriksen – at Euro 2004 and the 2006 World Cup – England were twice beaten on penalties by Portugal, both times in the quarter-finals.

Former England captain Rooney expressed support for his former coach on Thursday.

Eriksen made Rooney’s England debut against Australia in 2003, when the Everton striker was just 17.

Eriksen has also coached Lazio in Italy, Manchester City in England, and coached in China, Mexico and the Philippines. His career spans more than 40 years.

The Swede briefly served as head coach of the Mexican national team: from August 2008 to April 2009, during which time he coached the Mexican team in 13 games.
