Taormina Film Fest 2022, the program

The great cinema is staged at the Ancient Theater for the 68th edition of the Taormina Film Fest which opens with The Godfather in a restored version in the presence of Francis Ford Coppola. The evening, hosted by Anna Ferzetti, inaugurates a program full of stars, from Giuseppe Tornatore with Ennio to Ferzan Özpetek in the “one man show” Ferzaneide and celebrates female talent with Tell it Like a Woman, a polysymphony composed of seven shorts made by Maria Sole Tognazzi, Lucia Puenzo, Catherine Hardwicke, Taraji P. Henson, Leena Yadav, Mipo O, Silvia Carobbio and Lucia Bulgheroni which sees among the interpreters Jennifer Hudson, Cara Delevingne, Margherita Buy, Marcia Gay Arden, Leonor Varela, Jacqueline Fernandez, Ann Watanabe and Eva Longoria – protagonist of an episode shot in Italy – who will accompany the film in the Sicilian city. Tales of women in front of and behind the camera that will be preceded on the stage of the Ancient Theater by a musical moment with the award-winning composer Diane Warren and the singer, actress and dancer Sofia Carson.

Many musical interludes

A shower of emotions for an audience in a Festival dotted with musical interludes with the performances, among others, of Raphael Gualazzi who will perform for the public in a performance dedicated to music for cinema, Kaballà, Lello Amalfino, Max Dedo, Nicola Costa, Mario Venuti. The latter is also the protagonist of the biographical docufilm Something still burns by Daniele Gangemi which will be presented in an afternoon screening at the Palazzo dei Congressi. A musical journey that will end on 2 July with Ennioin the presence of the Oscar winner Giuseppe Tornatore, a poignant tribute to the most prolific and beloved Italian composer in the world.

The titles in competition

There are six titles in the international competition, reserved for first and second works, which explores different worlds and themes. It opens with the action thriller, based on a true story, American Murderer by the New York director Matthew Gentile, a young and promising talent, while the British Boiling Point by actor Philip Barantini on his directorial debut, takes us to the hectic kitchen of a restaurant on the busiest day of the year. It is femininity at the heart of Baby Pyramiddebut film by Danish director Cecilie McNair, psychological drama on the theme of fertility, and one more woman is the resolute protagonist of the western The Drover’s Wife the legend of Molly Johnson written, directed and performed by Leah Purcel, an Australian of aboriginal descent. Italy is in selection with two titles: The voices alone by Andrea Brusa and Marco Scotuzzi with Giovanni Storti, in an unusually dramatic role, reflecting on the side effects of social media and Spotty and mesecond film by Cosimo Gomez with Filippo Scotti, Marcello Mastroianni prize at the Venice Film Festival for the interpretation in It was the hand of God.

From Italy 1982 to Minions 2all the previews

A Festival that embraces cinema and music, but also sport with the world premiere of Italy 1982, a blue story. The legendary world champions of Spain Fulvio Collovati, Beppe Dossena, Franco Selvaggi and Marco Tardelli are ready to remember and relive, for the first time on the stage of the Ancient Theater, the exhilarating days of a triumphal and unexpected victory that forcefully entered the collective imagination . There will be no lack of Italian cinema with the premiere of My shadow is yours, a journey towards a never-ending love story which, based on the novel by the Edoardo Nesi Strega Award, marks the return to directing by Eugenio Cappuccio, with Marco Giallini, Giuseppe Maggio and the participation of Isabella Ferrari. The Minions also arrive with the world premiere of Minions 2 – How Gru becomes very bad by Kyle Balda, the new chapter of the most successful global animation franchise produced by Illumination by Chris Meledandri, with a special introduction by Max Giusti, the Italian voice of the evil Gru, who will interact with the Minions in 3D hologram.

Memories and tributes

A family comedy in line with another fil rouge of this edition which celebrates, in the official poster, two great icons of comedy Vittorio Gassman and Ugo Tognazzi. The two myths will be remembered by their children, Paola and Gian Marco, through a tribute with the afternoon screening of Come and have a coffee with us by Alberto Lattuada with Tognazzi e Without a family, people with no property seek affection, written, directed and performed by Gassman, in the versions restored by the Centro Sperimentale di Cinematografia – Cineteca Nazionale. A collaboration that is renewed, the one with the CSC – Cineteca Nazionale, also with a memory of Angelo Musco, one of the greatest Sicilian comic actors 150 years after his birth with the screening of Once upon a time there was Angelo Musco in 1953, with a very young Nino Manfredi. An unforgettable artist, Taorminese by adoption, who will be remembered with the Manfredi Prize awarded every year by the National Union of Italian Film Journalists who, in agreement with the family of the great Nino, will be awarded to a special talent, not only in comedy by SNGCI President Laura Delli Colli and a member of the Manfredi family.

Comedy and Sicily

The comedy genre exalted in all its forms: women and comedy in the meeting starring Caterina Guzzanti, Paola Minaccioni and Carla Signoris, three artists capable of giving smiles and breath of lightness with their talent and their irresistible personality. The courts

The Bolognese director Giorgio Rights will present a preview of his short film In family with Fabrizio Ferracane on the theme of the parent-child relationship, produced as part of the advanced training course in film directing ‘Fare Cinema’, written together with young and novice screenwriters, of which Rights was a teacher. Another intimate story comes with Zita semprifirst short film directed by Stefania Spampinato, Dr. Carina DeLuca of Grey’s Anatomy who, thanks to a correspondence between mother and daughter, explores the female experience through several generations.

You meet them

Marco Bonini will instead be the protagonist of a reflection on the public function of the actor, the theme of his book The art of experience published by La Nave di Teseo. And he will digress about comics and surroundings with the journalist Luca Raffaelli and the artist Lelio Bonaccorso in the Cinema and Comics meeting organized in partnership with Etna Comics. Another novelty this year is the presence of Discovery Channel, to enhance the excellence of Sicily and the pleasures of the throat, with two documentaries by Tiziana Martinengo. With regard to the enhancement of the territory, the Festival will host – in collaboration with the National Tourism Agency – the ENIT Award The cinema that promotes Italian beauty dedicated to films which, among those distributed in the last season, have enhanced and exalted the image of our country.

Alice Cosmpolitan, the award in collaboration with Alice nella Città

Alice nella Città renews its collaboration with the Taormina Film Fest with the Alice Cosmopolitan award assigned to an emerging talent of the DO 2021 Generation, a special project conceived by Daniele Orazi, to accompany a young promise of Italian cinema. Furthermore, the winning film of the Taormina Film Fest 68 will be screened at the Floating Theater Summer Fest, conceived by Fabia Bettini and Gianluca Giannelli. A journey into creativity in all its forms, which this year is organized in collaboration with the European Commission’s Representation in Italy. The closing ceremony on Saturday 2 July with the announcement of the winners and the delivery of the Golden and Silver Charybdis, creations of the talent and passion of Michele Affidato, the artist of the great prizes.
