The 75th edition of the Cannes Film Festival kicks off with Coupez! by Michel Hazanavicius. Review

Coupez! by Michel Hazanavicius opens the 75th edition of the Cannes Film Festival amid reflections on the value of cinema in society and the intervention of the Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelens’kyj.

Presenting the ceremony Virginie Efira who presented the jury of the official selection composed of Rebecca Hall, Noomi Rapace, Jeff Nichols, Asghar Farhadi, Deepika Padukone, Ladj Ly, Joachim Trier and, to represent Italy, Jasmine Trinca. The president of the jury is Vincent Lindon.

During the opening ceremony that introduced Hazanavicius’s film, the actor was awarded the Palme d’Or of Honor Forest Whitaker already protagonist of the first day of the Festival for having produced the documentary film For The Sake of Peace which tells of the internal struggles in the country and the attempts to bring peace by some mediators.

Coupez! A film about a director who has to make a film

Sound familiar to you? Of course 8 and 1/2 by Federico Fellini has been a school and since that film there have been not a few films that have imitated the style, not least Official Competition previewed at the 78th Venice International Film Festival in which the scheme is the same : a director has to make a film and between rehearsals, failed attempts, quarrels and the desire to always go forward despite everything we viewers see what happens behind the camera.

In the case of Hazanavicius we have a choral cast led by Romain Duris and Bérénice Bejo and it is the remake 2017 Japanese film French Zombie vs Zombie – One Cut of the Dead.
The synopsis is simple an unlikely zombie film crew is faced with a true zombie apocalypse.

However, this is a first level of the plot because in reality after having actually seen a zombie short film that responds to the aforementioned synopsis, the time of the story runs backwards and we discover that we are in another level of the story, the short we have seen is it was shot by a French director who has to convince a Japanese producer. Thus begins a countdown starting six months before the low budget product we have just seen and we find out how we got there.

The film then starts out as a horror splatter and becomes comical, completely reversing the situation and managing to entertain the audience especially in the second half of the story.
We have already seen Hazanavicius talking about cinema with cinema in the successful The Artist, a silent film just as if it were shot in the 1920s.

Once again, therefore, we see the director playing with genres and making different references to the cinema of other authors such as, in this case, a Quentin Tarantinowhich is specifically mentioned at a certain point in history, but perhaps also to Italian directors such as Dario Argento or even to the classics of the genre such as Night of the zombies and TV series like The Walking Dead, of course making fun of everyone and telling everything with irony.

<p>Obviously they could be even more references and this considering the fact that the horror / splatter / zombie genre really boasts many products.</p>
<p>Surely Coupez !, whose title could translate into Final Cut is a declaration of intent right from the title and looks like a blockbuster product (to use an obsolete term) but an author’s one.</p>
<p>In my opinion, the choice of such a film as the opening of the Festival is preferable to serious content that takes itself too seriously.</p>
